COLLAGEN

Research suggests that supplementing with collagen is a safe and effective way to improve the health of skin and joints.
Collagen is a protein, made up of long chains of linked amino acids. It plays a key role in the connective tissue throughout our entire body, contributing to the function of skin, blood vessels, muscles, tendons, ligaments, bones, and the digestive system.
Aside from aging, however, the top reason people don’t have enough collagen is poor diet. Your body can’t make collagen if it doesn’t have the necessary elements, namely amino acids and the nutrients to process them.
The word collagen comes from the Greek word “kolla” which means glue.
It is a long chain amino acid protein found in your body that is considered a major building block of skin, bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as teeth, corneas and blood vessels.“It’s the glue that holds the body together. Some of the individual amino acids are:
Gycine, Proline, Hydroxyproline and Arginine. These are primarily found in animal products, such as bones and connective tissue. Protein that contains amino acids is also needed and can be found in meat, poultry, seafood, dairy, gelatin, legumes and tofu.

As we age, our bodies produce less collagen and break it down faster than we can replace it. These signs of aging begins to occur with our skin becoming less firm, and cartilage in our body starts to weaken. Evidence has shown that collagen can improve skin, heal wounds, help with muscle wasting and ease arthritis symptoms.  Newer studies are now showing that by ingesting collagen can impact the skin positively.
Your diet, stress, aging, gut imbalances and autoimmune disease can affect the body’s ability to make collagen:
For example sugar and refined carbs or smoking interferes with your body’s ability to repair itself. It has also been found that certain autoimmune diseases, such as Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis can damage collagen.
Is Gelatin the same as Collagen? What is Gelatin?
Collagen is the protein found mostly in connective tissue and skin.
Gelatin is produced when collagen is cooked or boiled it breaks down into gelatin. Gelatin is cooked collagen. For example when making bone broth, the bones are packed with collagen. When the broth cooks the heat breaks down collagen into gelatin. When bone broth is in the refrigerator, you will see that it gels and thickens due to gelatin.

Gelatin is great for:
  • Using as an egg replacer
  • Use in baking to bind ingredients together
  • To thicken soups and sauces
  • Make your own jellos, marshmallows or gummies, or edibles.

What is hydrolyzed collagen?
Hydrolyzed collagen and gelatin are both made from animal collagen. Yet their structure and  properties vary. Hydrolyzed collagen is broken down into smaller parts of protein which can make it easier to digest.
It dissolves in hot water and cold water where gelatin does not. Also gelatin will ‘gel’ where hydrolyzed collagen does not.

Benefits:
  • Digestion-  can help coat the stomach and improve digestion.
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Promotes better sleep
  • Reduces anxiety
  • Hormone Balance - improves amino acid balance
  • Joint health - improvement in joint pain
  • Increases skin elasticity and moisture, reduces wrinkles, age spots and blemishes.
  • Dental health
  •  Protects the cornea from oxidative stress.
  • Aids in promoting the body’s ability to increase it’s own collagen
Where to find quality collagen?
RA Healing Naturally recommends Vital Proteins

You want a high quality collagen, so look for sources that include:
  •  USDA Organic certified, grass-fed pastured and humanely treated sources. If looking for marine collagen, make sure it is from wild-caught, non GMO fish.
  • No fillers, binders or artificial sweeteners
  • Look for products that utilize independent, certified third party labs to conduct tests on products.
