What are probiotics?
Definition: pro·bi·ot·ic     prōbīˈädik/
adjective
adjective: probiotic

  1. denoting a substance that stimulates the growth of microorganisms, especially those with beneficial properties (such as those of the intestinal flora).
noun
noun: probiotic; plural noun: probiotics

  1. a probiotic substance or preparation.
    • a microorganism introduced into the body for its beneficial qualities.
Probiotics are a beneficial supplement in the start of healing. Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts. Our bodies are full of bacteria, probiotics are the ‘good bacteria’ and keep your digestive gut healthy and restore balance to your gut flora. Probiotics support a ratio of good to bad bacteria in your gut. Since 80% of our immune system lives in our gut, taking care of it is important!
Strains - Choose a probiotic with high potency and multiple and diverse multi strains
Number of Organisms - You need at least 2 billion bacteria per dose.
Choose probiotic that is GMO Free, Soy Free, Dairy Free, Gluten Free
This also will show that the product is more regulated from contamination
Stability - Look for potency that is guaranteed till it expires. A probiotic that is shelf stable and does not require refrigeration.

Benefits of probiotics:
  1. Can help boost the immune system.
  2. Can improve digestive function.
  3. Can help with inflammatory bowel conditions.
  4. Can help fight food-borne illnesses.
  5. Can aid in acid stability in a leaky gut.
  6. Can stay in the gut for a long time.
  7. Aids in preventing/treating urinary tract infections.
  8. Manages and helps prevent eczema in children.
  9. Can help with psoriasis

You can get probiotics from naturally fermented foods as well as a supplement.
Examples of fermented foods are:
Sauerkraut - Fermented cabbage
Kimchi - Fermented vegetables and cabbage
Fermented pickles
Fermented cucumbers
Kombucha - Fermented black tea drink
Miso - Fermented soybean, barley or brown rice.
Nato - Fermented soybeans
Tempeh - A soybean product

What are Prebiotics?

When you consume a probiotic, it can be beneficial to include a prebiotic fiber, which are an insoluble fiber. Prebiotics are what feeds the friendly bacteria in your gut.Meaning that you cannot digest them, but your gut bacteria uses them as food and helps the probiotic do it’s job and flourish. Look for a supplement that includes a prebiotic.
Or eat foods that naturally have a prebiotic:
Bananas
Apples
Garlic
Asparagus
Onions
Leeks
Oats
Flaxseeds
Seaweed
Chicory root

These foods are best to be eaten in raw form, since fiber content may be altered during cooking.

Personal Notes: When I first started an elimination diet, my gut was in bad shape. I could not eat raw foods and eating any fermented foods (which are so beneficial to gut health) was out of the question. There are lots of probiotics to choose from. I purchased Fortify and in a year my gut was healed. It took about 5-6 months until I was able to eat fermented foods and this helped speed recovery time. I don't sell this brand, only mention it since it is what worked for me. I have used many other brands, but come back to the Fortify and recommend it. Try different brands to see which one benefits you the most.

Research on when to take probiotics ~
Conclusions - We have shown that the survival of non-microencapsulated probiotic bacteria through the stomach and duodenum is highly dependent on the time of ingestion and the protective capacity of the meal or beverage. Lactobacilli were somewhat less impacted by these factors than the bifidobacterium. Bacterial survival was best when provided within 30 minutes before or simultaneously with a meal or beverage that contained some fat content. As little as 1% (w/w) fat content proved superior to no fat content beverages for the preservation of the bacteria through upper GI passage. Protein content was not deemed to be as important for survival as fat content; however, additional studies should be performed to vary the protein/fat ratio over a broader range to further substantiate our observations. Survival was poorest when taken after a meal or when taken with spring water or apple juice. Probiotic yeast, S. boulardii, was not as influenced by these factors and even appeared to reproduce under most conditions tested. We conclude that probiotic capsules, when not enteric-coated, should be taken with a food or beverage with at least 1% w/w fat content to ensure the highest survival of viable microbes arriving in the small intestine ~ https://www.wageningenacademic.com/doi/pdf/10.3920/BM2011.0022?fbclid=IwAR0d2IHMoWSsElrg99HlKwz6LcyMcO95UCkhythTgnKpt9G4BsvArj1emhI&
